Rollerski poles are extremely important in Rollerskiing.

For starters you need appropriate poles that are made for rollerskiing. They need to be made of a sturdy yet flexible material like aluminum, the appropriate length(+ – 83% of your height on rollerskis) come equipped with resistant/ergonomic straps and come equipped with properly aligned ferrules. And just as importantly you need to know how to use your poles. Most beginner rollerskiers think they know how to use their poles but in reality they don’t know how. It’s not just a question of planting the poles but angling, tempo, synchronization and force of thrust/push. Plus you have to know what technic to use depending on the terrain, steepness and number or lack of object/obstacles.

Double poling is the best method to cross rough terrain. It’s the most efficient technic and most powerful poling possibility. It’s up to you choose from one of the 3 main technics. Double poling, classic or skate. If you don’t know anything or very little about rollerski technics I strongly recommend in fact I insist that you take rollerski lessons or get coached by a rollerski or snow ski instructor. Watching YouTube videos will be frustrating because you’ll never get live feedback or constructive criticism. Buying Ballerina shoes won’t help you be a Ballerina. What you need is coaching and instruction by a competent and certified professor. This is true for your first purchase of rollerski poles & equipment. You absolutely need to find a good coach/instructor before venturing out on your new rollerskiis.

Using appropriate poles for rollerskiing is just as important as using an appropriate paddle to kakak. Unfortunately I see many people trying to save money by using hiking poles to rollerski. Saving money is smart but using hiking poles is counterproductive when trying to rollerski. They’re too short, don’t have appropriate handles/straps and the ferrules are rounded & dull. So using hiking poles to rollerski is like using a hockey stick to kayak. Sure you’ll save a little money but it’ll be frustrating trying to move forward, control your direction and stay on balance. If you really want to enjoy rollerskiing take my wise advice and purchase an appropriate pair of rollerski poles and get professional help if you’re a newbie.
